Right but slow is a wrong answer you haven't gotten yet
A student sends me a practice test where they missed nine questions. The obvious move is to work through those nine. It is almost always the wrong move.
The nine misses are the visible part. The part that decides the next test is the set of questions they answered correctly in a hundred and ten seconds when the module gives them roughly seventy per question and the hard ones need more. Those questions count as right today. In November, arriving in the second module with four minutes on the clock, they are wrong.
What per-question timing actually shows
When every attempt is logged with a duration, a pattern appears within about two sessions. Most students have one or two domains where accuracy is fine and timing is far outside their own baseline. That gap is almost never a knowledge problem. It is usually a decision problem — the student is choosing a method that works and costs three times what the faster method costs.
Linear equations are the clearest example. A student who reliably solves by substitution will get the right answer and burn ninety seconds doing it. The same student, shown when to graph it in Desmos instead, drops to twenty. Nothing about their algebra changed.
Telling the two apart
The question to ask about any miss is whether the student knew they were struggling. A miss that came with a flag, a guess, or a visible hesitation is a content gap, and content gaps are the cheapest thing on the list to fix — often a single session.
A miss that came fast and confident is the expensive one. Something in the student’s rulebook is wrong, and every additional timed practice test is reinforcing it. More volume makes that worse, not better.
What this changes about a study plan
It reorders it. If the log shows a student is accurate and slow across a whole domain, the next four weeks are about method selection, not content review, and homework should be untimed drills of the faster approach until it becomes the default. If the log shows fast and confident misses, the work is diagnostic conversation — asking the student to explain their reasoning out loud until the broken rule surfaces.
Both of those are invisible on a score report. That is the entire argument for logging the attempts rather than the results.
